How Custom Jewelry Sampling Works
Custom jewelry sampling is the process of turning a product idea into a physical sample before bulk production. For small jewelry brands, sampling is one of the most important steps because it confirms the product standard before a larger order begins.
A good sample helps you check design, material, size, weight, finish, stone setting, packaging and overall customer experience.
Step 1: Send your design brief
The process starts with your product idea. You can send a sketch, reference photo, tech pack, existing sample or simple written description.
A useful design brief should include:
- Product type
- Material preference
- Size or dimensions
- Plating color
- Stone, enamel or logo details
- Packaging requirement
- Target market and price level
- Estimated order quantity
The more detail you provide, the easier it is to review cost and production time.
Step 2: Confirm material and production route
The factory reviews your design and recommends a practical production route. This may include 316L stainless steel, 925 sterling silver or brass, depending on the design and market.
Material selection affects cost, weight, finish, durability and sample time.
Step 3: Review sample cost and timeline
After confirming the technical direction, the factory can estimate sample cost and sample time.
As a general reference:
- Brass samples often take around 7-15 days after design confirmation
- 925 silver samples often take around 7-15 days after design confirmation
- Stainless steel samples often take around 30 days after 3D or design confirmation
3D design time is not included in these production timelines.
Step 4: Produce the sample
The sample is produced according to the confirmed design direction. Depending on the product, this may include CAD work, mold making, casting, forming, polishing, plating, stone setting, logo work and packing.
The goal is to create a sample that can become the standard for bulk production.
Step 5: Quality check and shipment
Before shipping, the sample should be checked for appearance, size, color, finish, stones, logo and function. The factory then packs and ships the sample for review.
After receiving the sample, the brand can approve it, request small changes or adjust the design.
Step 6: Move to bulk production
Bulk production should start only after the sample is approved. This keeps the production standard clear and reduces misunderstanding.
The approved sample becomes the reference for quality control.

Custom jewelry sampling is not just a small test order. It is the foundation of a reliable product line. For small jewelry brands, sampling first is the best way to control quality and prepare for repeat orders.
